One player hits crosses from both flanks to two team-mates, who attack and are marked by two defenders; a third defender is ready to counter-attack quickly. The goalkeeper practises dealing with crosses and then launching a counter- attack, the defenders make sure the goalkeeper can act unchallenged.
The goalkeeper practises dealing with crosses when he or she is basically unchallenged.
Fewer outfield players.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • When the person with the ball is coming down the flank, it is good if you can move sideways
  • You should be at least partially facing out towards the pitch
  • You will then see the ball and the person with the ball, as well as what is happening on the pitch and in the box
  • You will also avoid having opponents behind your back
  • Move along the line between the ball and the middle of the goal
  • Move e.g. towards the front part of the goal when the ball nears the goal-line
  • When the cross is hit, watch the ball and concentrate on it
  • Try to act with relaxed muscles, as you will then move more smoothly and flexibly
  • You can also react and move much more quickly when your muscles are relaxed
  • First check whether you should go out and take the ball or remain in your starting position
  • In this case, remain in line with the ball
  • If you are uncertain about if you can reach the ball by going out, it is better to stay where you are
  • Occasionally there will be a shot from the ground after the cross
  • In this case, move forwards and narrow the angle
  • However, if there is going to be a shot on the volley or a header, you should be slightly more careful
  • In this case, it is usually better to remain just in front of the goal-line, especially for headers
  • Start moving late when you want to go out to the ball
  • Then try to move at speed without stopping on the way
  • Try to move forwards towards the ball
  • This is often difficult when you are in the front part of the goal when the cross is hit
  • I.e. when you then want to go out to a ball straight in front of the goal or in the far-post area
  • In this case, you should first move quickly parallel with the goal-line and into the shooting line
  • Then move out towards the point where you want to take the ball
  • When you have to move backwards, you should ideally move sideways parallel with the goal-line
  • In this case, you should move facing out towards the pitch, which enables you to watch the ball at all times
  • In addition, you can check the situation where you are heading and where to place your feet
  • In other words, you should avoid backing away straight backwards
  • In the case of a high cross, try to take the ball in your highest possible position
  • 1B After all, you can get higher than the outfield players
  • As you can stretch out your arms and use your hands, and you should make the most of this
  • When you are moving out towards the ball, call e.g. your name or "Keeper!"
  • Call loudly in good time, as the outfield players will then hear you and you will avoid any misunderstandings
  • Check whether you should try to catch the ball or punch or deflect it away
  • However, you should be prepared to take other action quickly should something unexpected happen
  • If you are unchallenged, you should normally try to catch the ball in your grip and cup
  • Watch the ball all the way into your grip and cup
  • You should do this even when you feel quite sure you can catch the ball
  • Concentrate on every ball, even when you are unchallenged
  • You can then launch good counter-attacks by quickly putting the ball in play again
  • Learn to recognise when and how to deal with crosses when you are unchallenged
