A player or coach shoots and hits crosses in various ways, from various positions. Be in motion a little so that the goalkeeper has to adjust his/her position naturally in various directions before catching the ball.
The goalkeeper practises cupping the ball at various heights when standing, throwing him/herself or jumping up to take the ball.
After a while, give the goalkeeper slightly more difficult balls to practise on.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • When you want to catch and hold onto the ball securely, cupping is the best solution
  • You form a cup between your forearms and chest
  • Use your hands as a lid and completely encircle the ball
  • In order for the cup to be really tight, you have to hold your elbows together
  • In this way you will hold the ball securely and feel protected, even when you are being tackled
  • You will grip some balls first before taking them calmly and safely into the cup
  • This applies to e.g. high balls at and above head height
  • You can catch many balls directly by cupping them
  • You can then slow down the speed of the ball by leaning into it slightly
  • Because if you receive the ball straight against your chest, it may bounce away from you
  • For this reason, in the case of extremely hard shots at chest height, it may often be best to grip the ball first
  • Then take the ball into the cup as usual
  • In the case of low shots straight at you, we suggest that you first spread your legs
  • Catch the ball between your legs and then take it straight up into the cup
  • A prerequisite for this is that you have your hands behind the ball
  • You must also be extremely careful to keep your elbows together
  • If this does feel unsafe, you may try other ways of catching these low balls
  • In the case of low, hard shots straight at you, you can go to ground straight forwards into the ball
  • Catch the ball directly in the cup and land more on your forearms than your elbows
  • The shot will often come to the side of you
  • Occasionally you will have time to adjust your position quickly sideways and catch the ball standing up
  • If you have no time to do this, you will have to throw yourself after the ball
  • If you are cupping the ball when you land, try to land on the side of your body
  • If you hold your elbows right out in front of your chest, you will avoid landing on them
  • This feels better and it is easier to hold onto the ball in the cup
  • Always follow the ball with your gaze right into the cup
  • It is good for young players to take the ball into the cup at all times
  • I.e. finish catching the ball by calmly and safely taking it into the cup
  • It is occasionally difficult to catch and hold onto the ball immediately
  • Occasionally, you will even have to release it
  • In this case, always try to catch the ball again quickly and take it into the cup
  • Do this both in training and in matches
  • When you want to catch the ball, concentrate and relax your muscles
  • Learn to recognise and automatically decide when and how to use the cup
