Organization
One player throws or passes high balls to a team-mate who heads at goal, with and without jumping. Pass from both directions, take rebounds and swap roles.
Learning
Try turning your whole body towards goal before heading or move towards the ball, only turning your head and occasionally also your upper body towards the goal when heading.
Variations
Hit increasingly realistic (as in a match situation) crosses from the flanks.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • You can head high balls at goal in different ways
  • Dependent on where the ball is coming from, how high it is travelling, how you are moving
  • The ball may come from in front, from the side or from behind, in which case a headed flick should be used
  • Headed flicks are described in skill 3 about flicking and in the heading skills
  • Sometimes you have to jump to head the ball, while at other times you can remain on the ground
  • The technique is basically the same in all of these various situations
  • One difference is how you should turn your body, e.g. when heading to the side
  • You can turn your whole body in the direction of the header and head the ball as normal
  • You can also turn your upper body or just your head in the direction of the header
  • You can change the direction of a header at the last moment simply by turning your head
  • If you find yourself in a duel, try to make the most of your heading technique
  • If you jump first and get above your opponent in the duel, this will enable you to control the situation better
  • Learn to head the ball in the ways which best suit you in these various situations
  • Accuracy is achieved by connecting with the ball properly
