Organization
Play e.g. three against three. Score e.g. by running with the ball into the six-metre goals. One player in the attacking team only provides support, i.e. two players attack against three defenders, who then have the opportunity to practise covering effectively. To start with, you can carry out one attack per team per go.
Learning
The players primarily practise covering areas behind each other.
Variations
Play freely after a while.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • When your opponents attack, you must have cover behind each other
  • You should primarily cover the offensive areas which your opponents want to use
  • I.e. the danger areas
  • You are covering effectively if you are first to reach the ball following a pass into the area you are covering
  • You may also have to take over a team- mate's role when defending against an opponent
  • E.g. when your opponent goes past your team-mate and you have to take over
  • In this case, a team-mate must quickly cover the danger area behind you instead
  • The most interesting areas for your opponents are behind your back line
  • And in front of your goal
  • For this reason, you must always be able to cover these areas when necessary
  • The goalkeeper can help out by covering behind the back line during play
  • E.g. by running out on the field and being first to a pass in behind the back line
  • During play near your own goal, the goal- keeper can help cover in front of goal
  • Covering should be carried out on the basis of the imaginary line between the person with the ball and your own goal
  • Although you hardly need to be exactly in line at all times in order to cover effectively
  • If you are playing with a sweeper, he or she can assume responsibility for much of the covering work behind the back line
  • However, everyone must be ready to cover the offensive areas your opponents want to use
  • This applies regardless of marking system and whether you are playing with or without a sweeper
  • Learn to recognise when and how you should cover areas in various game situations
