Drill practices, Game practices and Practice at home, as well as more general coaching points ("Secrets").
Organization
Play two against two with a goal and goalkeeper. A supporting player passes to the attacking pair, who are marked by two defenders. Start a new attack following an interception or a finish. Swap roles after a while.
Learning
The players practise marking each other in various ways and at suitable distances in various situations.
Variations
Compete and feel free to use two supporting players, so that there are even pairs when you swap roles.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • When an opponent has the ball, you need to mark some of your other opponents
  • When you are marking, you should keep an eye on and guarding an opponent without the ball
  • This applies primarily to opponents who are in the offensive areas they want to use
  • These areas are referred to as danger areas
  • From the individual's point of view, marking is generally the same regardless of the marking system you use in the team
  • First and foremost, the player you are mar- king should be marked from goal-side
  • The player must never get past and get the ball behind you, heading towards your goal
  • The distance to the opponent you are marking depends on where the ball is
  • The closer the person with the ball is to you and your opponent, the closer you should mark
  • A rule of thumb is that you should be able to reach your opponent at the same time as the ball reaches him or her
  • You can then immediately intercept or pressure your opponent, who is facing the wrong or the right way
  • This also means you should avoid marking any closer than necessary
  • As your opponent can then dodge away from you in the deep and give support behind you
  • Learn to recognise when and how you should mark opponents in various situations
