Demonstration practice
When you subscribe, you will also find:
Drill practices, Game practices and Practice at home, as well as more general coaching points ("Secrets").
Organization
Play e.g. three against three in and around the box. The attackers try to play themselves forwards in order to finish at the goal and goalkeeper. The defenders practise defending around their own box and try to intercept. Swap over attack and defence at regular intervals.
Learning
Practise defending around your own box during central attacks.
Variations
Mark out a pitch and compete against each other in teams. E.g. attack for three minutes per go per team.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • When your opponents attack in the middle, it is important to defend sensibly
  • The best way to do this is to fulfil the principles of defence
  • You will then agree about who should do what when defending around your own box
  • This means that you can defend methodically
  • I.e. without panicking, even though your opponents are near your goal
  • The goalkeeper and outfield players help each other effectively by communicating
  • Pressure the person with the ball hard in the shooting sector, i.e. in the area from which the shot may come
  • You will also have to block shots when necessary, without deflecting the ball into your own goal
  • In this case, it is also important to work well with the goalkeeper
  • E.g. by pressuring and steering the person with the ball clearly
  • The goalkeeper will then have a better chance of seeing the ball before and during the shot
  • And he/she will have a better idea about where and when a shot may be hit
  • You must also help out by taking care of rebounds and second phase balls
  • Protect your goalkeeper when your opponents are about to attack him or her
  • E.g. when the goalkeeper jumps up to take a high ball or after a shot
  • You should primarily defend the danger areas
  • This also involves marking the players who are in the danger areas
  • Move the team towards the person with the ball while still guarding the far-post area
  • The best way to do this is to avoid just looking at the person with the ball and at the ball
  • Instead, move so that you can look out onto the pitch as often as possible
  • In this way, you will also see what your opponents without the ball are doing
  • Even when they are e.g. trying to run behind your backs into the far-post area
  • The exception to this is the pressuring player, who should look at the ball and the person with the ball
  • Learn to recognise how to act during central attacks, in and around the box
