Organization
The players stand in one short line. The first player runs with the ball towards the goalkeeper at a realistic pace, without stopping on the way, and tries to score from the one on one situation. Practise the one on one from various positions and angles.
Learning
The players practise scoring from one on ones against the goalkeeper when they are relatively unpressured.
Variations
Decide a reasonable amount of time each player is allowed in which to score, to make the training realistic.
Coaching points (here we call them SECRETS):
  • Occasionally, you get clear against the goalkeeper and are relatively unpressured
  • This means that no other opponent is particularly close to you
  • Somehow watch the goal and the goalkeeper
  • You will occasionally have the time and the opportunity to look up and see what the goalkeeper is doing
  • You can occasionally see what the goalkeeper is doing out of the corners of your eyes using your split vision
  • You will usually use a combination of the two
  • Every time you touch the ball, you must be looking at it to maintain good control
  • Keep the ball close to your feet as you approach the goalkeeper
  • For this reason, learn to use the inside and outside of both feet when clear
  • You can then also move quickly in various directions when necessary
  • Do never get too close to the goalkeeper
  • Disguise what you are going to do; you can occasionally disguise and fool your opponents with your gaze
  • Try to relax and concentrate
  • If the goalkeeper remains near the goal-line, it is best to shoot low close to one of the posts
  • Occasionally, the goalkeeper may move out towards you and narrow the angles effectively
  • The first basic suggestion when the goalkeeper is well positioned and covering effectively is to feint
  • Feint a few metres in front of the goalkeeper
  • You will then still have time to do something else if the goalkeeper remains where he/she is
  • If you try e.g. a shooting move, you may get the goalkeeper to go to ground
  • You can then e.g. chip the ball over the goalkeeper or run past with the ball
  • You can also try a shooting move when the goalkeeper is moving out towards you
  • You can then get the goalkeeper to stop and partially lose his/her balance
  • For example, the goalkeeper may be leaning back a little, making it difficult for him/her to move to either side
  • In this case, shoot quickly and low to the side of the goalkeeper or run past with the ball at high speed
  • You can try to fool the goalkeeper into going to ground or leaning to one side
  • In this case, it is good to use e.g. a body move or a scissors move
  • If you succeed, you can then run past the goalkeeper with the ball in the other direction
  • The second basic suggestion applies when the goalkeeper is well positioned and waiting for you
  • This suggestion applies when you are coming from straight or diagonally in front at high speed
  • In this case, run with the ball to the side and force the goalkeeper to move to the side
  • Ideally, run with the ball in the direction that improves the shooting angle
  • If you do this, the goalkeeper has to take a chance and throw him/herself after you and the ball
  • In this case, you should be a little way away from the goalkeeper, otherwise he or she may be able to reach the ball
  • You can then roll the ball in under or to the side of the goalkeeper
  • Or you can chip the ball over the goalkeeper
  • If you have plenty of time and space, you can run on with the ball and roll it into the empty goal
  • Practise unpressured one on ones frequently, and you will learn to recognise how to act
  • In matches, you will then act quickly and automatically when you are clear
  • Without thinking what to do, as you can never know how the goalkeeper is going to act
